I have recently upgraded from the 600 to the 900 rally and both models have the clunk. I agree with your comment about the clutch.
Spoke with my dealer and mechanic who also agrees. As the clutches take up the slight delay as they kick in causes the clunk. I thought it may have been backlash in the driveshaft but it's not. It doesn't do it all the time but it is a little annoying. Went for a ride with mates and clocked up 700 kilometers in a day and didn't clunk at all until 2 days later. Love riding it so much I'm okay with the clunk.
