Hitch ?

#1 Post by Floggerella » Wed May 22, 2019 6:43 pm

Does anybody know if there is a hitch attachment available for towing small trailers? I’ve seen them with the Spyders but I’m getting a Rally 900 Friday and I’d like to eventually pull a small trailer if possible.

From the owner's manual . . .
Towing a Trailer
Do not tow anything with the vehicle, it is not designed for this application.
In addition, the VSS will not be effective, you will be more likely to lose control

Such claims are often written by the lawyers, not the engineers. We had (my son still has) a 1998 Jetta TDI 5 speed. The Manual says "For technical reasons, you cannot tow with this vehicle". Well we had a hitch installed & indeed towed. When my son moved to California (from Florida), when the car was 15 years old, and had probably around 235,000 miles he rented a fairly large U-Haul, put his motorcycle and some of his heavy lighting equipment (he's in the movie business) and household goods in the trailer, and totally stuffed the car too.

I was worried he'd blow a turbo in the mountains on the way there, as old and how many miles car had. He made it there just fine! The turbodiesel normally got 50+ MPG on the highway, but with his heavy towing, his MPG dropped to the low 20s! He now has the car at almost 20 years old and 270,000 miles and it still runs great, and almost everything on the car is still factory original! The best car I ever bought.

Thanks for the info.. I get the machine this weekend so I don’t have a manual to read yet. Sucks a bit cause the Spyders have some nice little trailers... 😢
Thanks again !! Sue
